Media

Today in English, Whaea Kerry had introduced us to our new topic which is Media. Media can be apps or objects that are able to spread news or other stuff around to whoever views it. Mass media is a much larger platform that shares to a rather big audience. 

Examples of media: 

- Social Media (Tik Tok, Instagram, Snapchat etc.) 

- T.V 

- News. News Articles 

- Website                       

Reading Response on NZ Herald News Article

 For the past week we have been learning about how to do a reading response at level 1 and also trying to understand short text. We had two forms of short text to choose from and I chose the NZ Herald News Article, I hope you enjoy it :)

Title of the text - Whangarei lawn mowing Good Samaritan found

Summary of the text (4-6 sentences) 

Nikau Munroe Rawiri is known as a Good Samaritan after mowing Cynthia Browns. He had claimed to have been going to his mothers after mowing the cemetery lawn, to mow hers. He then passed an old lady mowing her own lawn. “I got up the road and was having conflict with myself: my head was saying to go but my heart was saying to go and help her out”. Keep in mind it was a hot day. Brown had told her daughter and she urgently sent out a search for who this man is in giving him a prize for a role at pest control. He ‘graciously declined’ and instead got given a hamper of pest control products. 

The key idea in the text - SEXY paragraph

I think that the key message in the text is you should always help people in need no matter what. By this I mean if you see that someone is in need of help then to man up and help them out. Example of this was when Nikau claimed that his mind was saying no and to carry on, but his heart was telling him to help her, so then he manned up and helped her out. In my own life, I come across times where I see people struggling. I do all that I can to help out, and make it easier for them. 

What can we learn from the text?

We can learn that if you know it is the right thing don’t just observe, be in action and do whatever you can to help. You don’t have to sacrifice your lovely skin getting burnt to help people, helping people could even be just lifting a heavy box. 

Being Cyber Smart

 Being Cyber Smart:

I highly agree that it's very important to be Cyber Smart online. Being Cyber Smart about being on the right side of the web and always doing positive and kind things. Examples of being Cyber Smart; Always on the appropriate sites at the right time, keeping passwords and security stuff Private. The one and only part I will push is making secure able passwords. How will I make sure everyone will hear this message ? I will share to my families about what I learnt and I will educate my little young ones about it to.

BOIC All About Me

Kia Ora my name is Jacque I am a year 9 at Bay of Islands College. I am New Zealand Maori, Cook Islander, and Samoan. I’m an only child. Something I enjoy is being surrounded by all of my friends and family. Challenges I have faced have been having multiple teachers, and also tests that we’ve had so far. A personal goal of mine is to be able to be able to pick up my maths. A new experience was being in the bilingual unit. It was a surprise to me as to how much maori we actually do, but has been hard to adapt to the changes.  I’m really looking forward to my years to come. If I do my full 4 years at this college,  that will be the first time I spent my whole school years at one school. I'm very excited for my years to come. 

Day 2 Activity 1: Faster than a speeding bullet

Today Taylor came in to our class to do a teaser activity with us for the Summer Learning Journey. We We had to choose out of 3 activities to do and the one I chose was the first one about Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and had to come up with similes about her, here are mine :)

Last week, it was the big week. The big week that we have been having hard training's for. 6 months of training all came down to 1 week. Wednesday was the day it all came down to. 4:30am in the morning, early, early, early wake up. "Bang, bang, bang" first thing every morning you wake up. After karakia we had to wake and get ready for the big day. Girls were put in the mattress room, boys in the wharekai. "BOYS STAY IN THE WHAREKAI, GIRLS STAY IN THE MATTRESS ROOM!" that was the massive rule. "NO LEAVING YOUR CHAIRS EITHER" 2nd big rule. Getting ready was a hectic time especially for the girls. Get your hair done, get it curled (if needed), tamoko, put dress on. These isn't the order we done them but that was what we had to do. Skip to 8:40 everybody is freaking out. We done a silent run through before we left. 8:50 we left Te Ohaki Marae and went to Claudelands. 45 minutes later...

"We're here!" my nerves are running through my blood taking over, once I got to room 2 (changing room) I couldn't last long and I started balling my eyes out. My tears wouldn't stop crying until I hit the side of the stage. Walking on the stage, seeing all my family, made me less sad and made me more stronger ad confident in my self. 25 minutes...

Wooo it's all done 6 moths came down to 1 week, Wednesday, then to 25 minutes. It was a crazy ride with them. The haka tautoko really got to me and I didn't stop crying for about 20 minutes. 

To end of I will just like to give encouragement, if you love something, push your self so that you can give it all you have. Also never join things for the trip or for friends, you do it for you. 

Te Rau Pou Manawa, I love you  guys to bits and it was the best. Te Rau Pou Manawa Ki Te Hoe!
