Leadership, Government, and Democracy.

 In Social Studies we have been looking into Leadership, Government, and Democracy. 

Firstly, Leadership. We mainly looked at what we thought a leader is and the 3 common attributes I chose were Humility, Confidence, and Dedication. 

Secondly, Democracy. I learned that Democracy is a Government System where the community chooses who they want for Government in elections every 3 years. 

Lastly, the Government. Government is a wide group of people whose aim is better for the country. 

These topics are relevant because 1 it is the name of our topic and 2, there is actually a ‘Democratic Government’ where the Government of that country abides by Democracy. We can also link Leadership into our schools. One of our activities was an Hierarchy of Leaders in our school and we looked into the positions they hold, and the importance of their roles. An extension of work that I had done was an action change regarding Marae Funding and how money should be given to marae to rebuild our whare. Rebuilding our whare begins the rebuilding of our tikanga and Reo. This topic challenged my thinking by learning the different types of councils and what each has to do individually for our communities. Overall this unit was very educating with not only Leadership,  Government, and Democracy but also who these people are and what they do for us and I am very thankful to those who have taken hold of those positions.

Leadership within our School

 Kia Ora, and today I will be reflecting on our topic ‘Leadership within our School’. 

We were given the task to make a Hierarchy about Leadership that is in our school. At the top, I had put the Ministry of Education and bottom was us students. We’d name the positions and all the names of people that take part of those roles. 

I have learnt in depth who takes up these important roles within our school and who to acknowledge in what they do. 

Another topic which I’ve completed that I think relates to this assignment is my ‘Leadership Speech’. In my speech, I talk about the three main attributes of a true leader, and one of which  is dedication. The Hierarchy shows us the people who have dedicated their time and selves to our school. 

Overall, I’ve realised that leaders aren’t only the people that are doing things for our country, but they are also people making changes within our school. I have taken notice of these people, and will forever thank them for providing the best possible experience for my school life.

Speech Reflection:

To kick off our topic of Leadership for Social Studies. Whaea Muritere made us do speeches. Half of the reason was because she heard about English Speeches so she wanted us to do one for Social Studies. We were given the task to write a 2 minute speech about anything along the lines of Leadership. The one issue I had with this speech was time. The speeches were assigned right on the week of the kapa haka regional so time was not on my side. I had decided to have the speech in 1 week so that I didn't have to worry about it too much afterwards. So although I had a somewhat decent speech done, I feel it could've been more depth and detailed. In the end we had been given a whole extra week to get them done, so rushed for nothing but oh well. I based my speech on the 3 main attributes I thought made a true leader those being Humility, Confidence, and Dedication. Here is my speech for you... 

Leadership: 

There is a saying that goes 'actions speak louder than words' which to me in a nutshell is what a true leader is all about. Leading from the front, putting the needs of others first. When there is a problem a true leader stand us for their team and takes the full grunt of the ridicule and wears it on the chin. All of what I've shared is part and parcel of the three main attributes that signify a true leader. 

Firstly, be Humble. As a leader the achievements are not defined to the individual. But a true leader gives credit to where credit is due, that being to their group, peers, and those who have helped in getting them to where they are. 

Secondly, be Confident. Let your yes be a yes, and your no be a no. A true leader is able to stand up accordingly and be that person that people can always rely on to do what needs to be done, and say what needs to be said. 

Lastly, be Dedicated. Sylvester Stallone quotes 'It ain't about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you take and keep moving forward'. That's the dedication of a true leader, taking the hits, taking everything and still being able to continue.
